The legendary French actor who had won the hearts of many ladies is none other than Patrick Dewaere. The Patrick Dewaere Award was established in his name in the year of 1983. He was always loved by his fans and many had honored his name. A French singer; Raphael wrote a song “Chanson pour Patrick Dewaere” in his honor.
Dewaere was born in 26th of the January in 1947 as Patrick Jean Marie Henri Bourdeaux in a French family. As his mother was an established actress; Mado Maurin, he was familiar with film industry from an early age. He was the third child of Maurin family. His parents had six children along with him, Jean-Pierre Maurin, Yves-Marie Maurin, Dominique Maurin, Jean-Francois Maurin and Marie-Veronique Maurin, all involved in the acting career with differ in success. He was only 4 years old when he debut in the film. He attended a private school; Cours Hattemer. From an early age involving in media made him popular among his school friends and it also give reason others to mock him. One of the movie, he played in his early adulthood is The Happy Road in 1957 playing the character of Gene Kelly.
In 1968, he joined a French television programme called “Café de Gare”, where he worked for a decade almost. During working for this programme, he changed his stage name into Dewaere which was his grandmother’s maiden name. During this time he was romantically involved with his girlfriend Miou-Miou. The turning point of his career was casting in Bertrand Blier’s anarchic comedy movie Les Valseuses in 1974.

In a short life span, he had casted in more than a dozen of films. He had earned name and fame but his net worth is not published. Some of the movies in which work can be seen are Themroc as a police officer in 1973, Catherine et Compagnie as Francois in 1975, La Meilleure façon de marcher a Marc in 1976, Le Juge Fayard dit Le Shériff as Jean-Marie Fayard in 1977, Coup de tête as François Perrin in 1979, Mille milliards de dollars as Paul Kerjean in 1982 and many others. His last movie was Paradis pour tous as Alain Durieux in 1982.
He was married to French actress Sotha for eleven years and they divorced in 1979. They had a daughter named Angela. In 1980, Dewaere married his second wife, Elsa and became parents with second daughter. But after two years, they broke up. This break up had the devastating impact on the actor. And around this time, he was portrayed as a suicidal depressive in his last film; Alain Jessua’s Paradis pour tous (1982). And after that he was working in his next movie Claude Lelouch’s Edith et Marcel in which he was playing as ill fated boxer. On the 16th July 1982, after meeting his director, the actor returned to his home in Paris, picked up a rifle given by Coluche and shot himself in a mouth.
Today, he remains one of the most revered actors and he is honored by the Prix Patrick-Dewaere.
